What is an Angiogram?

An angiogram, also known as an arteriogram, is a medical imaging test that uses X-rays to take pictures of your blood vessels. This procedure helps doctors detect blockages, narrowing, or other abnormalities in the arteries and veins, often critical in diagnosing conditions like coronary artery disease, aneurysms, and peripheral artery disease.

Why is an Angiogram Performed?

Angiograms are typically recommended for patients experiencing symptoms like chest pain, shortness of breath, or leg pain. These symptoms can indicate underlying vascular conditions that need further investigation. By providing a clear image of blood flow, an angiogram allows doctors to:

  • Identify Blockages: Determine the location and extent of blockages in the blood vessels.
  • Assess Vessel Health: Evaluate the health of arteries and veins.
  • Plan Treatments: Guide procedures like angioplasty, stent placement, or surgery.
